A security company posted one job listing for a senior back-end developer. Of 827 applications received, roughly 12.5% came from fake identities. Pindrop ran that experiment on itself after recruiters reported hearing tonal abnormalities during remote interviews. It had the advantage of being a fraud detection company and could scan its own pipeline. Most organizations cannot. That was the early signal. Here is where it has landed. On 2 August, eleven nations including the US, France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands issued a joint advisory on operatives using real-time deepfake video to defeat live hiring screens. Amazon has disclosed blocking more than 1,800 suspected fraudulent applicants, with attempts rising 27% quarter over quarter. In one survey of IT and fraud leaders, 41% said their organization had already onboarded a fraudulent candidate. Not flagged. Hired. Gartner projects that by 2028, one in four candidate profiles globally will be fake. The compliance dimension is what changes the calculus. DOJ has so far characterized affected employers as victims, but DOJ and OFAC have both signaled that inadequate compliance programs carry exposure to wire fraud, sanctions and money laundering charges. Counsel are now advising that this be treated with the same rigor as AML and export control due diligence. Every stage of hiring assumes the face on the screen belongs to the person speaking. Real-time synthesis removed that assumption, and nothing was put in its place. HR is now a security perimeter. Very few companies have staffed it like one. #innovation #ai #technology #future #entrepreneurship #startups #venturecapital #cybersecurity #management #leadership #founders
